Meta’s flagship platforms—Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—experienced significant disruptions on Wednesday afternoon, leaving thousands of users unable to access services. The technical issues began around 12:30 p.m. EST, with reports peaking at over 100,000 for Facebook on DownDetector by 1:10 p.m. EST. Tens of thousands of Instagram and WhatsApp users also encountered similar problems.

By 2 p.m., the reported issues had significantly decreased, with Facebook outages dropping to 28,000 and other platforms showing signs of recovery. Some users attempting to access Facebook were met with an error message stating, “We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can.”

Meta acknowledged the disruption in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that a technical issue was causing limited access for some users and assuring they were working to resolve the problem promptly.

Key Disruptions

Meta’s business services, including Facebook Ads Manager, Messenger API for Instagram, and WhatsApp Business API, were among those severely affected. The company listed these services as experiencing “major disruptions” on its status page.

Recent Context

This marks another high-profile outage for Meta in 2024, following a global outage in March that disrupted services for over two hours. Technical issues were also blamed for that incident, which affected hundreds of thousands of users worldwide.

Meta’s outage is the latest in a string of recent tech disruptions, including Microsoft platform issues and Reddit outages in late November.
