Dubai Travel Chaos: Thunderstorms Ground Flights, Cause Delays and Cancellations
Adverse weather conditions have wreaked havoc on flights traveling to and from Dubai, causing widespread delays, diversions, and cancellations on April 16 and 17.
Dubai and its neighboring emirates, including Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, and Al Ain, bore the brunt of the severe thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and heavy rainfall. As a precautionary measure, schools and government offices have shifted to remote work arrangements, while residents have been advised to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary.
Dubai Airport, a bustling international travel hub, witnessed over 20 cancelled flights and numerous delays on April 16 alone, impacting routes to various destinations, including cities in India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Manchester, among others.
Images circulating on social media depicted inundated roads in Dubai, with vehicles struggling to navigate through flooded highways. Airlines such as Emirates have cautioned passengers to arrive at the airport well in advance, recommending up to four hours before departure. Additionally, Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority extended the operating hours of the Dubai Metro until 3 AM to facilitate smoother transit for passengers.
Passengers are advised to monitor their flight statuses via the FlyDubai website, with airlines providing updates on the evolving situation. Despite efforts to mitigate disruptions, Dubai Airport officials confirmed significant operational challenges with a temporary suspension of operations for 25 minutes on April 16. A total of 21 outbound and 24 inbound flights were cancelled, while three flights were diverted to neighboring airports due to the adverse weather conditions.

In response to the crisis, the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority issued preventive guidelines, emphasizing measures to safeguard properties from heavy rain and hailstorms. Recommendations include parking vehicles in secure and elevated locations to minimize potential damage.
